2009 Descendants Liegeois Dupont
Tasting notes
Dark purple-black color. Intensely but seductively aromatic. Dried blueberries and blackberries, mince meat, sweet vanilla and butterscotch toast with hints of dried herbs and brambles and black licorice. The palate is soft on the entry, but explodes as it moves across the palate. It tastes lively, is medium to full bodied and mildly acidic and tastes of sweet vanilla, mince meat and dried blackberries with hints of dried herbs and toast. This wine is fairly well structured for Syrah, finishes long and is nicely balanced to pair with food.
Grapes are from Les Gosses Vineyard which is in the Red Mountain AVA. This wine is 100% barrel aged for an average of 13 months in about 2/3 new oak and 1/3 1 or 2 year old oak consisting of 32% French, 11% Hungarian and 57% American wood.
Harvest Notes: 2009 was a fairly “normal” year early on, which led to normal set. The summer had normal heat units but about half the average number of days over 100 Fahrenheit, which meant photosynthesis was maximized, leading to earlier than usual sugar accumulation and concurrent ripening of normally separated varieties. Combine this with a hotter than normal 3rd week of September, which caused some premature shriveling, and a frost the 10th of October, and it made for a very busy first 3 weeks of September and a “crazy” last week of September and 3 weeks in October. Our vineyards and those we purchase fruit from worked diligently to harvest “on time”, which maximized fruit quality, leading to another great vintage.
