2002 Two Vineyards Reserve
Tasting notes
Dark, almost black, ruby colored wine, which is typical of wines from Red Mountain. Dense, ripe black cherry, blackberry and cassis fruit aromas are perfectly balanced by toasted oak and vanilla aromas with hints of cola, licorice, and clove spice. This wine enters the mouth lush and sweet and is followed by an explosion of black fruit flavors with hints of toast and earth. Fruit is king in this dark, dense wine from the start to its long, fine-grained tannin finish.
Production notes
Grapes are from the Red Mountain Appellation vineyards of Bel’ Villa and Red Mountain. The wine was aged as individual lots in 75% new and 25% selected one to two year old French (80%) and American (20%) oak barrels for 22 months.
Other notes
Harvest Notes: Very hot followed by cold, wet windy temperatures during bloom and set caused uneven set. Combine this with a typically warm summer and ideal extended fall ripening conditions of warm days and cool nights and the result is a somewhat unusual combination of generally higher sugars and acidity and lower pH in the grapes. Thus the wines tend to have higher alcohol but crisp acids and great complexity in flavor and aroma. A challenging but ultimately great vintage for those patient enough to let the grapes achieve optimum maturity.
