Cellaring: This wine is a little tight now, but like other Red Mountain wines, should age well, probably peaking in 10 years, but still be very drinkable at 15 years old.
Red Mountain produces the most delicious Syrah. A powerful, and structured wine, the DLD is always a delight for the winemakers to ferment. The Syrah was harvested between September 10th (Tablas Creek clone) and finished up on September 11th (Joseph Phelps clone). We had three different lots from three separate picks in Les Gosses vineyard. The resulting blend consists of 85% Tablas Creek clone and 15% Joseph Phelps clone. We barrel selected a blend of 48% New oak (67.5% American oak and 32.5% French oak) and 52% Neutral oak. After aging for 21 months in barrels the wine was bottled. Blending single varietal wines is such a joy and really shows you the that different clones and fermentation styles can make for very different wines. Blended together, they create a layered and complex Syrah.
Harvest: 2021 was a warm and dry growing season. We saw an impressive amount of heat at the end of June, with Red Mountain hitting 118 degrees and staying above 100 for most of June and July. Our vineyard team was on top of irrigation every step of the way and although this dry, warm year left us with lower yields, the vintage overall is showing nicely.
