Tasting notes

(tasted 10/4/2010) Still great dark color. Toffee, cinnamon, dark fruit, dried black cherry, red candy, black pepper, smoke and a hint of dried herbs and menthol on the nose. Lively acidity, dark fruit, tobacco, spice and a hint of earth on the palate. Tannins and a bit of sweetness are still there and make for a long, smooth and powerful finish. This is a lovely, complex wine still showing fruit but with the complexity that aging can bring.

Production notes

The wine was aged 17 months in new French oak.

Other notes

Harvest notes: Very hot followed by cold, wet windy temperatures during bloom and set caused uneven set. Combine this with a typically warm summer and ideal extended fall ripening conditions of warm days and cool nights and the result is a somewhat unusual combination of generally higher sugars and acidity and lower pH in the grapes. Thus the wines tend to have higher alcohol but crisp acids and great complexity in flavor and aroma. A challenging but ultimately great vintage for those patient enough to let the grapes achieve optimum maturity.
